Digital media development LO2 part 14

part fourteen of my continuation of the digital media sketchbook.

here for part fourteen of the digital media work i have chosen an archway created in acrylics and oil pastels to be the background and also a self portrait in oils as the main topic.

firstly as I usually begin the development process using some options from the layers box. The difference tool was used on here and I like the fact that the portrait looks to be hiding behind the archway and is also placed within the centre immediately bringing the portrait to being the focal point.

taken from the above ‘difference’ image I edited it slightly by using the graphic pen effect taken from the sketch option of the filter gallery. It has given the image an eerie old movie effect because of the grain.

I used the lighten tool from the layers selection and i feel it has helped the the portrait and detail of the archway to be more visible.

  gr -1              gr -2

from the above ‘lighten’ image i took the image further and used the gradient mapping tool for these creations. gr -1 is of the blue tint and seems quite bland as the tone of one colour all over just does not give the image positive justice; gr -2 on the other hand was used with an orange and blue tint and is much more striking to the eye as the colours are mixed well together, bold and bright.

Digital media LO2 development part 3

Just a continuation of the previous development process for my digital media project.

Here I chose a background image of a ruined interior made using glue and acrylics on an apron surface which then has the portrait layered on top.

from the layers list i chose the ‘difference’ option and the result came back quite futuristic as the furniture has morphed into the portraits facial features seems almost robotic. The shading is quite dark but are still able to have the number of colours stand out.

also from the layers list i chose ‘colour burn’. This unfortunately was not so successful; the furniture has morphed into portrait and shaped it well but to another viewers eye they would not be able to make out that there are additional objects surrounding the image.

For the next images to be shown below I decided to only manipulated the furniture. Not part of the original subject matter but there is nothing wrong with a little experimentation I suppose: -

this has been transformed using the gradient map tool with a blue and yellow tint. It helps make the image more abstract and the yellow is quite overpowering therefore stands to attention.

taken from the filter gallery ‘graphic pen’ tool taken from the sketch options. I really like the old style red colouring the graphic pen tool created and the detail of the burnt furniture has helped to give a rustic feel to this.

Once all of my developments have been uploaded I shall revisit the works I made and develop them further if i feel i could improve them more.

Some more inspiration for my digital media

I love this fine art piece and the surrealist feel to the trees having portraits. To me if feels like the artist was trying to depict that nature is also a living creature yet at the same time the image comes across as a creepy story that the trees in the forest are always watching.

this image has a similar eerie feeling as the above image yet soft.

i enjoy the vibrant colours of this manipulated image which looks to have been created by using multiple filter choices and layers. clearly focused around portraiture and the grooming of a man’s ritual in the twenties.

i really like the contrasting shades here of the greyscale with a dab of blue. The piece is full of emotion with the man looking sad or full of regret. The small splash of blue helps add the drama to the image which makes it that bit more effective.
